What Is Screwworm?

Screwworm is the larval stage of the fly Cochliomyia hominivorax. When the fly lays its eggs in an open wound, the larvae hatch and feed on the animal’s living tissue. This can affect dogs and cats, and the wound can worsen quickly. If you notice larvae in a wound on your pet, seek veterinary care immediately.

Keeping a close eye on your pet’s wounds can help you detect the problem early. Prevention is also part of preparing for travel. If you plan to cross the border between Mexico and the United States with your dog or cat, check the current health requirements for your pet’s species and destination, including any screwworm-related documentation that may be required.
